Our Story

How Lake Norman Dog Training came to be

Lake Norman Dog Training was founded in 2020 by Sarah Thompson, a certified professional dog trainer with over 15 years of experience working with dogs of all breeds and temperaments. After relocating to the beautiful Lake Norman area, Sarah recognized the need for high-quality, science-based dog training services that focused on positive reinforcement methods.

What began as a small, one-person operation quickly grew as word spread about Sarah's effective, compassionate approach to dog training. Local dog owners were drawn to her ability to solve even the most challenging behavior problems while strengthening the bond between dogs and their families.

As demand increased, Sarah carefully selected and trained additional trainers who shared her philosophy and commitment to excellence. Today, Lake Norman Dog Training has grown into a team of dedicated professionals serving the entire Lake Norman region, but we maintain the personalized approach and attention to detail that set us apart from the beginning.

Our unique location on Lake Norman has also allowed us to develop specialized training programs for boat-loving families, helping dogs become comfortable and safe during lake activities—a service that has become one of our most popular offerings in this water-centric community.

From basic obedience to complex behavior modification, our mission remains the same: to improve the lives of dogs and their owners through education, understanding, and positive training methods.

Our Training Philosophy

The science and principles behind our approach

At Lake Norman Dog Training, we believe that effective dog training is built on understanding canine behavior, clear communication, and positive reinforcement. Our approach is grounded in science and focuses on teaching dogs what we want them to do, rather than punishing them for behaviors we don't want.

We reject outdated dominance-based training methods that rely on fear, intimidation, or pain. Instead, we embrace modern, humane techniques that build trust and strengthen the bond between dogs and their owners.

Positive Reinforcement

We reward behaviors we want to see more of, making training enjoyable for dogs and increasing the likelihood they'll repeat those behaviors.

Clear Communication

We teach owners how to communicate effectively with their dogs, establishing consistent cues and expectations.

Relationship-Based

We focus on building a strong, trusting relationship between dogs and their owners as the foundation for all training.

Force-Free Methods

We never use shock, prong, or choke collars, or any methods that cause fear, pain, or intimidation.

This approach not only produces reliable behaviors but also creates confident, happy dogs who work with their owners out of trust and understanding rather than fear of consequences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our team and approach

What certifications do your trainers hold?

All of our trainers hold professional certifications such as CPDT-KA (Certified Professional Dog Trainer - Knowledge Assessed), CBCC-KA (Certified Behavior Consultant Canine - Knowledge Assessed), KPA-CTP (Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner), or equivalent credentials. These certifications require extensive knowledge, experience, and a commitment to humane, science-based training methods. Our trainers also regularly participate in continuing education to stay current with the latest developments in dog training and behavior.

How did you become dog trainers?

Each of our trainers has a unique journey, but all share a deep passion for dogs and a commitment to improving the lives of dogs and their owners. Some began in animal shelters, others in veterinary settings, and some transitioned from related fields like human education or psychology. All have completed formal education in dog training and behavior, apprenticed with experienced professionals, and continue to expand their knowledge through workshops, seminars, and conferences.

Do you have experience with my dog's breed/issue?

Collectively, our team has worked with virtually every breed and most common behavior issues. We understand that while breeds may have certain tendencies, each dog is an individual with unique needs and characteristics. During your initial consultation, we'll discuss your specific situation and match you with the trainer whose experience and expertise best align with your dog's needs.

Why don't you use correction-based methods?

We choose positive reinforcement methods because they are not only more humane but also more effective in the long term. Research consistently shows that aversive methods (shock, prong, choke collars, etc.) can cause physical and psychological harm, damage the human-dog relationship, and often lead to suppressed rather than resolved behavior issues. Our positive approach builds confidence, strengthens bonds, and creates lasting behavior change without the risks associated with punishment-based training.

Are you involved with the local community?

Yes! We're proud to be active members of the Lake Norman community. We regularly volunteer with local shelters and rescue organizations, offer educational workshops for community groups, and participate in local events. We also offer discounted services for recently adopted shelter dogs and work closely with rescue organizations to help prepare dogs for successful adoptions.
